In the streets theft is a regular occurrence. Recently, in one of the cities we work in, many of the drug dealers were getting robbed. Someone was going around and pistol-whipping them and taking their drugs and their cash. It had all of them really scared. This continued until those who were doing the robbing got wind of serious retaliation planned by someone who had a reputation for violent retaliation. It stopped them in their tracks.

This is also the believer’s responsibility.

We are called to be enforcers. Jesus taught us in Matthew 11:12 that, “The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.” In John 10:10 He also showed us that, “The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy.” In this case we realize that the thief is the devil and that he regularly comes to take what isn’t his. He steals health. He takes finances. He robs relationships. In fact, the enemy isn’t above trying to steal anything that is supposed to be for the people God loves. That’s where we come in.

In Exodus 22 God starts outlining the laws concerning stolen things. There are laws about how much needs to be returned and laws about making restitution. But in no place is there any leeway. When a thief is caught, the thief MUST give back what has been stolen plus extra for the trouble caused. This is what we’re learning to do in the street ministry and what we, as the people of God, need to learn to do all over.

We must learn to become enforcers of God’s covenant with His creation.

If the thief tries to steal relationships, we go into prayer until those relationships are restored. If he tries to take health we go into prayer until the health is restored. In fact this is one of the most important things we need to learn how to do because, just like all bullies, the enemy will continue picking on victims who haven’t learned how to fight back. Violently. Just like Jesus said in Matthew 11:12, we must learn how to violently advance the kingdom of heaven.

So fight on. First figure out how to enforce the laws in your own life and family. Then help with the war in your church or ministry context. And then, when you’re ready and willing, let’s be used by the Lord to enforce His laws in the cities we live in and set captives free for the glory of Jesus’ name.

With Love
